Department of Buddhist Studies


Buddhist Studies Course
In this Department, students will learn wisdom for living in modern society through the teachings of Buddha. They will also learn the language for reading and understanding Buddhist scriptures and deepen their insight into Buddhist paintings, statues, and other aspects of the culture.


Buddhist Cultural Heritage Course
In this course, a collaboration between the Departments of Buddhist Studies and History, students will study the Buddhist cultural heritage that has influenced Japanese culture and civilization over time, including the architecture, arts, performing arts, and literature that the religion brought forth while conducting investigative and verification fieldwork inside and outside Japan.


Buddhist Denominational Studies Course
Throughout the four years in this Course, based on the philosophy of the practice of wisdom and benevolence behind Taisho University’s foundation, students will study the four major sects of Buddhism—Tendai, Shingon Buzan, Shingon Chisan, and Jodo Sects)—and Jishu Sect in small groups of classes.
